Post-Vegas Shooting Speech for a Member of Congress with Guts

I rise today to discuss the worst single-gunman mass shooting in United States history, which occurred in Las Vegas on October the 1st, and the failure of members in both the House and Senate to speak to the issue of gun violence in its wake.

The number of American families that have been destroyed by gun violence is staggering. Since 1968, approximately 1.6 million Americans have been taken from us — needlessly — through gun homicides, suicides, and so-called “accidents.” For every American who is killed by gunfire, two more are shot and injured…
